The world is changing fast, and mostly for the better. I write ‘mostly’ because there are a few aspects that are still a cause of concern. One of them is how we have started managing conflicting opinions. Lately, I have found that many are taking workplace differences of opinion personally and straining relationships. This is not healthy at all. On the other side, I see a few bowing down to the extent that others trample them. This is even unhealthier.

In a world full of diverse perspectives, respecting others’ opinions is essential for healthy communication. However, it is equally important to stand firm on one’s convictions. Striking a balance between open-mindedness and steadfastness ensures meaningful discussions, personal growth, and a stronger sense of self. Each individual has unique experiences, beliefs, and values that shape their opinions. Dismissing them outright leads to division and misunderstanding. Respecting opinions does not mean agreeing with them but acknowledging their existence. This fosters constructive dialogue and creates an environment where people feel heard.

When people feel respected, they are likelier to engage in discussions without hostility. It also prevents unnecessary arguments and promotes mutual respect in society. For instance, respecting differing opinions in workplaces leads to better teamwork and innovation. A culture of respect ensures that every voice is valued, even if disagreements exist.

While respecting opinions is crucial, standing firm on personal beliefs is equally important. Convictions define a person’s principles and guide their decisions. Without them, individuals become easily swayed, leading to a lack of direction and confidence.

But being firm does not mean being stubborn or close-minded. Instead, it means having well-reasoned beliefs that withstand scrutiny. When convictions are based on facts, logic, and values, they serve as a strong foundation for decision-making. Whether resisting peer pressure, making ethical choices at work, or sticking to personal values in relationships, unwavering convictions help maintain integrity.

Sometimes, we might need to convince others about our thoughts. To convince others without tension, listen actively, acknowledge their views, and present your points calmly. Use logic, facts, and relatable examples. Avoid aggression or dismissive tones. Ask open-ended questions to encourage dialogue. Find common ground and express your stance with confidence and respect, ensuring a positive and productive discussion.

Finding a balance between respecting opinions and staying firm is key. It is a skill that fosters better relationships, informed discussions, and personal strength. It ensures a balance between open-mindedness and self-assurance.

In a world where opinions vary, this approach leads to constructive conversations, personal integrity, and a more respectful society.

 


In my last post, I covered how delegation enables business leaders to manage work by dividing responsibilities, thus helping increase productivity and attention to business development activities. Many leaders are concerned that once the tasks are delegated, they lose control of the business. The essence of the solution is to delegate while still keeping some control. I said I would provide a framework on how leaders can delegate without losing control, and that’s what I intend to do in this blog post.

By providing the needed supervision or setting certain boundaries, such as monitoring and using tools or systems, we can properly utilize resources such as time, which is crucial in business decisions. With a systematic approach, an organization can achieve its growth objectives while achieving the needed business objectives.

With these pointers as a guide, we first must establish that not every task is for delegation. Leaders have to assess ordinary day-to-day tasks or specialized assignments that can consume as much time as tasks that others can do. Equally important are primary activities such as planning, critical thinking, and major accounts for the business, which should always be supervised by the leader.

Delegation is most effective when it involves assigning work to competent people. Before delegating, leaders should evaluate employees’ strengths, experience, and capability. Task assignment to the correct person guarantees effectiveness and minimizes the necessity of constant monitoring. But let me insert a cautionary word here. Vague instructions result in errors and delays. Leaders ought to give clear work scope, timelines, and quality requirements.

Delegating without empowering workers with proper tools and knowledge is a guaranteed recipe for disaster. Business executives should ensure their employees have the resources, training, and support to do work efficiently.

A methodical approach guarantees successful delegation with control. Executives can take these simple steps:

• Clarify the task and its urgency.

• Choose the right individual by expertise.

• Establish clear expectations and timelines.

• Give required tools and directions.

• Create a system of progress monitoring.

They need to trust their workers but check progress at critical points. In this way, they can retain control while giving employees independence to work. Frequent reports and performance checks guarantee alignment with business objectives.

While leaders cannot micro-manage, this process will keep them updated on progress. Consistent check-ins ensure responsibility but give space for autonomy. Periodic meetings, reports, or short updates enable monitoring without intrusive interference. Staff should feel at ease mentioning challenges or seeking explanations. Leaders have to build an open culture of communication wherein members report back on progress, seek advice, and provide feedback. We have to be sensitive enough in our behavior so that the individual assigned the task gets the courage to communicate bad news as soon as he is aware of it.

When delegating action, leaders must maintain control of important decision-making. Employees may perform tasks, but significant approvals, financial choices, and strategic shifts must stay in the leadership’s hands.

Delegation is not an event but a process to develop future leaders. Charging employees with vital projects enhances confidence and ability. Leaders must employ delegation to create a strong team while maintaining oversight.

Mistakes are an integral part of the learning process. Rather than micro-managing to avoid errors, leaders must deal with them positively. Coaching the team on improving performance strengthens the team and minimizes future mistakes.

A robust delegation culture makes sure that work flows smoothly between teams.

 Last Saturday, we had Vasant Panchami, the day that marks the celebration of Saraswati Puja, which this year was exceptionally delightful. For this year’s puja, primary rituals spanned over two days.

Saraswati Puja signifies special adoration with the Goddess Saraswati and is very important to Indian tradition. She is the Goddess of wisdom, learning, music, and arts. It is commemorated as the festival of Basant, or the spring season, which is celebrated predominantly in India and Nepal. People revere Goddess Saraswati to receive wisdom, artistic skills, and mental clarity.

Saraswati Puja is much more than a religious occasion; it is a cultural one, too. It fosters faith in learning and wise thinking. In Hindu mythology, Saraswati is the symbol of wisdom and knowledge. In a way, worshipping her is a form of a pledge one takes to pursue education and improve one’s self. This festival is widely celebrated in schools, colleges, and households. All around the globe, children offer books, musical instruments, and writing tools to the goddess in prayer for her blessings. It emphasizes the significance of knowledge in living life.

Knowing is essential to personal and social development. This is Saraswati Puja's main message. On this day, particularly in Bengal, parents start priming their infants with the alphabet in a practice called “Hathe Khori.” It marks the commencement of schooling. Worshiping Saraswati aids in forming respect for studying and learning. It nurtures motivation, self-discipline, and a thirst to be engaged in education.

Saraswati is also recognized as the goddess of creativity and art. Normal people look up to her for inspiration, be they artists, musicians, or writers. The mind is a kaleidoscope of ideas when one's thoughts are lucid. The puja motivates people to take art reasonably seriously. Several cultural activities are held during the Saraswati puja. Schools and colleges conduct singing, dancing, and reciting programs. These serve the purpose of developing skills as well as cultural heritage.

Saraswati is often portrayed in white attire which stands for innocence and reality. The 4 hands represent the four key aspects of human consciousness, often interpreted as the mind (manas), intellect (buddhi), ego (ahamkara), and pure consciousness (chitta). The book, the rosary, and a veena represent the balance - between knowledge and spirituality. Students wish and pray to her to gain wisdom beyond the classroom. Knowledge is much more than academic information; it includes ethics, a proper lifestyle, and being spiritually conscious. Saraswati puja teaches that wisdom should be put to good deeds.

Festivals are the best way to bond with people. Students enact plays it in competition with other schools, and teachers and parents can feel the togetherness around them. Many children thank their parents for guiding them through the new world.

In Bengal, people gather to participate in rituals and feasts. The feast helps to foster social interaction and allows people to learn together. It also cultivates reverence toward teachers and older people, which are commendable virtues. There is a confidence boost and spiritual upliftment from getting the puja blessings. They feel reassured from receiving the blessings.

I'm happy that the Saraswati Puja is still celebrated even with modern changes. It challenges the belief that knowledge alone will suffice and promotes strong moral values. Schools and colleges celebrate the puja with great fanfare. The younger generation is nurtured to value education and customs. It combines the past and the present, keeping wisdom ahead, in every aspect of life.
